Top 5 Tips for Preventing Back and Neck Problems

Back and neck pain can be the worst kind of discomfort and pain there is. Our backs and our necks are constantly working to keep our body elevated and our heads upright. Even when we’re sitting or lying down, we are still using our backs and necks to some degree. This is why preventing back and neck discomfort is so crucial. Once it starts, it can be hard to reverse it, and sometimes it can turn into a chronic problem that could require serious care by a chiropractor or other licensed professional. According to health statistics, 3 in 4 people complain of consistent back pain. Here are the top five tips for preventing back and neck problems.

  1. Avoid sharp motions that require your body to twist. The more you extend and twist your head, neck and back, the more your muscles have to contort, tighten and loosen up. By making too many of these types of movements, you can effectively throw out your back or cause your neck muscles to spasm. It is important to take this into consideration when you are working out or lifting heavy items, and carry out these motions as gently as possible.
  2. Strengthen your core. Everyone these days is talking about the core, but many people don’t even know what the core is. Essentially, the core is the middle part of your body – the center of your body. By strengthening your abdominal muscles and the muscles around your back, you are effectively protecting your spine and its surrounding muscles. Moreover, you won’t be relying on your back to do much of the work that should be done by your abs. Not only will your back thank you, but you will also feel more confident with your stronger, leaner torso.
  3. Maintain good posture. Posture can be one of the hardest things to maintain, but the more upright your back is, the less you will run into back and neck problems later in life. The slouchier your back gets, the harder it has to work to keep itself upright. There are a number of ways to keep your posture immaculate. You should constantly correct yourself as you walk, sit, or even stand. You may have to remind yourself every minute or two at the beginning, but with time it will become as infrequent as 2 to 3 times per day. You can also do exercises that strengthen your back and lower abdominal muscles.
  4. Practice safe lifting. One of the number one ways people get back pain is from their occupations. Many jobs require heavy lifting, which over time can start to wreak havoc on the back. If you have a career that requires you to constantly lift heavy items, it is important to not only have neck and back braces, but also to bend your knees when you lift. You should also never push yourself further than you have to.
  5. Stay a healthier weight. Even moderate obesity can start to cause wear and tear on your vertebral discs. The more weight there is, the heavier the burden for the body. If this is the case, it is important to find a way to keep the calories down. Not only will your back feel great, but you will too.
